Cases pile up against actor Sreelekha at Muchipara PS

Kolkata: One police station, six complaints, two FIRs lodged so far — and counting. Muchipara Police Station is facing a new challenge as Zero FIR complaints against actor Sreelekha Mitra keep pouring in.
Around two weeks after Mitra protested at the anti-NEET paper leak using an objectionable poster of PM Narendra Modi, triggering a series of protests and FIRs against her, Muchipara PS is now getting Zero FIRs forwarded from districts like Malda and Murshidabad where individuals residing there have sought to lodge an FIR against the actor.
Since the beginning of this week, Muchipara Police has registered two FIRs from complaints registered in Malda. This takes the total number of FIRs lodged against Mitra in Kolkata Police area to six. Across Bengal, the numbers are expected to be several times more. Incidentally, Muchipara PS has jurisdiction over Sealdah court area, the spot where Mitra allegedly carried the objectionable poster.
“We have received six complaints at Muchipara. Not all are actionable. But the cases where FIRs have been drawn up have been forwarded by the SP's office in Malda,” explained an officer.
“The first case from Malda has been recorded on the basis of attached letter of SP, Malda, read with Zero FIR of Habibpur PS, Malda and letter of complainant of Tarashankar Roy (30 yrs) against Sreelekha Mitra and other protestors to the effect that on July 24 the accused persons during a procession in Kolkata publicly displayed a derogatory picture of the PM to intentionally insult him, provoke breach of peace and hurt public sentiment,” said an officer.
The second case has been recorded on the basis of the attached letter of SP, Malda, read with the zero FIR of Bamangola PS, Malda and the letter of the complainant, Gour Chandra Sarkar, against Mitra and organisers of “Left Students Union” claiming that the accused persons displayed a derogatory picture of the PM to intentionally insult him, provoke breach of peace and hurt public sentiment.
Importantly, the second FIR mentions the organisers, though unnamed, as accused.
On Wednesday, the cops yet again stated that they are neither dropping the FIRs nor stopping the investigation in the seven cases registered against the protesters. “We are following both the Supreme Court orders and the Bengal government directives,” said a senior cop, adding Mitra case is not directly linked to the original protest.
Multiple police stations across Bengal—including Anandapur, Entally and Survey Park in Kolkata, Bidhannagar Cyber PS, Chatterjeehat in Howrah, and Noapara in Barrackpore—have also registered cases against her. Charges filed across these locations include intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace, public mischief, and defamation.
Mitra loyalists confirmed that she has received multiple police notices within a short span, directing her to appear for questioning at various police stations.
