FIR after 4 BJP men vandalise promoter’s office, demand Rs 5 crore

Kolkata: Four BJP workers have been named in an FIR for vandalising the office of a promoter in Bishnupur in South 24-Parganas, from where he runs a construction material business, and demanding Rs 5 crore from him.
The FIR was registered in May but resurfaced on Wednesday after the complainant, Sulindra Kumar Kamti, spoke about his ordeal.
According to the complaint, a group of men allegedly damaged a warehouse, vandalised office property, including computers, laptops, refrigerators and other valuables, and took away several articles. The complainant alleged he later received phone calls, demanding Rs 5 crore, and was threatened against reporting the incident to others.
Police said the incident took place soon after the Assembly election results were declared on May 4.
Following the registration of the case, cops at the Bishnupur Police Station launched an investigation and conducted raids. But the accused had already secured anticipatory bail from the Alipore court. Police said no arrest had so far been made and the allegedly stolen articles had not been recovered.
An officer of the Bishnupur PS said an investigation was underway. “The incident occurred soon after the election results. But the allegation of demanding Rs 5 crore is yet to be verified. The accused have obtained anticipatory bail from the Alipore court,” the officer said.
The complainant alleged the accused abused his employees, threatened them and demanded a substantial amount of money. He claimed they warned that the company would be allowed to operate only if it complied with their diktats.
The matter has also reached the BJP’s Diamond Harbour organisational district unit. BJP organisational district leader Sufal Ghatu acknowledged the accused were associated with the party and identified them as Pora Dilip, Babai Mallick, Pradip Kule and Ashok Mollick. “We have informed the party’s seniors about the allegations. Appropriate action will be taken if the allegations are found to be true. Such acts are unacceptable and cannot be supported,” Ghatu said.
