  • Kolkata: Continuous shooting and bombings in Howrah’s Liluah Burma Colony between rival factions over control of a building material syndicate and a gambling ring triggered panic in the area on Tuesday night. One person was injured.

Allegations indicate the injured person, Nimai Maji (37), has been running a construction material syndicate for a long time, and had a rivalry with a gang led by Kalu Shaw.

Around 10.30 pm on Tuesday, when Maji was in his office with his associate Sunny Hela, two masked assailants barged in and opened fire. He was hit in the shoulder and ear. The miscreants then fled on a bike. Alerted by Sunny, Maji’s gang launched a retaliatory attack, lobbing bombs at Kalu’s closed office.

Liluah cops took Maji to hospital. Although doctors removed the bullet from his lungs, Maji remains on ventilator support.

Kalu and his associates have absconded.
