Developers to meet govt seniors over bldg work ban

Kolkata: The high-level committee overseeing the structural safety of high-rises in Kolkata, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas and Howrah may issue an SOP on construction safety on Thursday.
Developers said they expect the SOP to be released at a symposium on structural safety in building construction and resumption of construction that will be convened by the committee headed by PWD secretary Antara Acharya at the New Town Convention Centre on Thursday evening.
All construction in high-rise projects (G+5 and higher) were suspended on June 25, a day after an under-construction warehouse collapsed near Taratala. A high level committee was thereafter set up to audit the projects. While more than 500 projects had been identified for the audit process, less than 100 have till date been given the go-ahead to resume construction. The issue has been further compounded by the failure of builders to submit details of 150 projects to enable the audit. Last week, the original July 31 deadline for completion of the audit was extended to Aug 15.
Hence the cautious optimism from a section of builders of the committee allowing work to resume subject to an undertaking that the SOP will be followed. An official said problems detected by the audit team in projects will also be discussed.
