Kolkata: Emami Agrotech Limited (EAL), the branded foods arm of the Rs 30,000-crore Emami Group, is entering India’s snack market. EAL has launched a new brand, WeMe, to tap into the high-margin snacking segment, estimated at Rs 1 lakh crore and growing at a 10% CAGR.
Emami Group director Aditya Agarwal said the company aims to build WeMe into a Rs 1,000-crore brand in the next three to five years. WeMe’s initial lineup includes Choco Hazelnut Spread, jhuri aloo bhaja and potato chips. To support the expansion, EAL plans to set up a dedicated manufacturing plant in Bengal within two years, investing about Rs 400 crore. It also plans to spend another Rs 350 crore on marketing and brand building over the next couple of years.
Emami director Vidula Agarwal, who is leading the initiative, said the addressable market for the categories WeMe is entering first is about Rs 50,000 crore, with more snack categories likely to be added over time. The rollout will begin in Bengal and expand nationally depending on consumer response. Some products are already available on Blinkit, and within the next 10 days, WeMe is expected to reach 25,000 retail outlets in Kolkata.
Vidula said Bengal represents roughly 10% of the target snack market and that the company is aiming for at least a 3% market share in the state within three years. Emami is positioning WeMe as a digital-first brand.
Aditya Agarwal added that snacks offer significantly higher margins (15–20%) compared to edible oils (2–4%) and other kitchen staples like spices and cereals (6–15%).
EAL has an annual turnover of around Rs 20,000 crore.
