Kolkata: Despite Kolkata receiving only a couple of light rain spells on Thursday, the cloud cover over the city sky forced the mercury to slip below 30 degrees after a gap of 10 days. While Alipore had recorded only 3.9 mm of rain till 5.30 pm the Met office has not ruled out some intense spell to hit the city anytime till Friday first half.
The maximum temperature on Kolkata went down to 28.6°C on Thursday. A low of 3.1 notches below normal this was the lowest in about three weeks. The last time maximum temperature remained below 30°C was on July 26 when Kolkata recorded 29.6°C.
“The monsoon trough has shifted towards our region due to which there is the possibility some intense spell in Kolkata and some districts of south Bengal till the morning on Friday. The rain frequency and intensity are likely to go down by Saturday,” said HR Biswas head at Regional Meteorological Centre Kolkata.
According to a special IMD bulletin the monsoon trough currently is passing through Firozpur, Rohtak, Shahjahanpur, Kanpur, Daltonganj, Digha and thence east-southeastwards towards Northeast Bay of Bengal.
In addition there are two upper air cyclonic circulations – one over Northwest Bay of Bengal & adjoining north Odisha-Gangetic West Bengal and another over south Gangetic West Bengal & adjoining Bangladesh.
“In view of above favourable meteorological condition, Heavy to very heavy rainfall at one or two places and thunderstorm with lightning activity very likely to occur over some districts of West Bengal during next four days,” said the bulletin.
The other districts where heavy rain is expected include Howrah, North and South 24 Parganas, East and West Midnapore and Jhargram.
