Health dept probes 6 more pvt blood banks for irregularities

Kolkata: The crackdown on blood banks flouting norms continued in the city with the health department starting a probe into six more blood banks. Sources cited allegations of multiple irregularities, including selling of blood and plasma to neighbouring states illegally, organising blood donation camps bypassing regular norms, and others.
A few days ago, the department ordered the closure of the Health Point Blood Bank after finding prima-facie evidence of irregularities.
According to Swasthya Bhawan sources, the State Blood Transfusion Council (SBTC) lodged a complaint with the State Drug Control against Ashok Blood Bank (Jodhpur Park), Kothari Medical Blood Center (Alipore), Peoples Blood Bank (Hazra), Life Care (Entally), Om Blood Center (Beleghata), and Ispat Co-operative Hospital Blood Center (Sonarpur).
“There are multiple allegations against the six private blood centres, including irregularities in collection, storage, and transportation of blood, along with evidence of severe negligence and selling of blood products to some neighbouring states, which is illegal,” said a health department source.
“We have found some evidences of these six banks violating norms in addition to committing offences like selling blood and blood products, submitting forged documents to health department, luring donors with gifts etc. The probe is still on and we expect to come up with more evidences in the next few days. Our findings will be submitted to officials once we are ready with the final report,” said a source.
