Calcutta high court refuses urgent hearing to Abhishek Banerjee aide Sumit Roy in 4 FIR case

KOLKATA: The Calcutta high court on Friday refused an urgent hearing to Sumit Roy, personal assistant to TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee, in connection with four FIRs registered against him at different police stations in West Bengal.
Roy's lawyer Trideep Pais told the court that the four FIRs were unrelated to two other cases, in one of which Roy had received protection from the high court and in another from the Supreme Court.
Seeking an urgent hearing of Roy's petition on August 10, Pais said that apart from the two cases in which he had received protection, four other FIRs were registered against him. Challenging these FIRs, Roy has filed a quashing petition and sought interim protection from any coercive police action.
Refusing an urgent hearing of Roy's petition, justice Saugata Bhattacharyya said the matter would come up for hearing according to the serial number of cases before his court.
The court said similar matters were appearing in the list and there was no scope for upgradation of Roy's petition.
The Supreme Court stayed Roy's arrest on Thursday in connection with a land-grabbing case in West Bengal's Salboni, while directing him to fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation.
Roy had approached the apex court challenging the Calcutta high court's rejection of his anticipatory bail plea in connection with an alleged government land fraud case being investigated by the Salboni Police in Paschim Medinipur district.
He has been granted anticipatory bail by the high court in another case related to an alleged cash-for-jobs scam.
