  • Kolkata: A young woman who allegedly attempted suicide at her Behala home on Sunday, was rescued by her father and police and admitted to hospital.

During questioning, she alleged she had endured nearly 29 months of repeated sexual assault, forced recording of intimate moments, a forced abortion, extortion and repeated acid attack threats by a man she had befriended on social media.

She said she took the extreme step after the accused refused to marry her despite her becoming pregnant.

Police said the complaint was lodged by the victim’s father. The accused, identified as Manoj Gayan alias Biky of Behala, allegedly established a physical relationship with the woman on the false promise of marriage.

After she became pregnant, he allegedly refused to marry her and forced her to undergo an abortion.

Investigators said the accused later threatened to circulate intimate photographs unless she met his demands, allegedly extorting around Rs 2 lakh.

He also allegedly threatened to throw acid on her if she approached police.

A case has been registered. Police have recorded the victim’s statement and are collecting evidence.

The accused man is absconding, said police.
