Agartala: Election Commission will start Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Tripura starting Sept 5.
Chief electoral officer (CEO) Brijesh Pandey said it will involve identifying and eliminating duplicate voters, as well as entries involving individuals who have moved, passed away, or are not qualified, all while making sure that every eligible citizen has the chance to register.
For this exercise, 3,356 booth-level officers (BLOs) and 375 BLO supervisors will operate throughout the state, addressing all 60 assembly constituencies and 3,356 polling stations. Currently, Tripura has about 28.97 lakh registered voters, comprising approximately 14.52 lakh men and 14.45 lakh women.
Pandey said the verification process will start on Sept 15 and run until Oct 14. During this time, BLOs will visit homes to hand out pre-filled enumeration forms, assist residents in filling them out, and collect completed forms. Each household can expect three visits from their corresponding BLO.
Voters will need to confirm their personal information, provide necessary details, sign forms, and return them before the deadline. For added convenience, forms can also be submitted online via the ECINET application or web portal.
Pandey specified that no documents will be collected during the initial door-to-door enumeration phase. If further verification is necessary, the electoral registration officer (ERO) will send out notices once the draft electoral roll is published, allowing individuals the chance to provide needed documentation.
The draft electoral roll is set to be released on Oct 21, 2026, after which residents can file claims and objections between Oct 21 and Nov 20. The final electoral roll is expected to be published on Dec 23, 2026.
Pandey said while Aadhaar can be used to verify identity, it won’t serve as evidence of citizenship. If someone wants to challenge a decision made by the ERO, they can appeal first to the district election officer and then to the chief electoral officer, based on Representation of the People Act, 1950.
The CEO said BLOs are currently mapping family lineages by connecting existing voters with the 2005 electoral rolls, which are accessible on the official CEO Tripura website for the public.
Pandey said training sessions for election officials, BLOs, political parties, and booth-level agents have been completed. Additionally, discussions with political parties are under way at state, district, and sub-divisional levels, while helpdesks and toll-free services will be available during the entire revision period.
