After intel alert on JMB threat, cops boost coordination with BSF

Jalpaiguri: The state govt has intensified liaison with BSF after intelligence inputs indicated an increase in the activities of Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) in districts along the India-Bangladesh border, senior officials said.
While state police brass are holding weekly coordination meetings with BSF officers, police stations in border areas have been asked to maintain regular contact with border outposts. Ad hoc posts of anchal officers have been created in every border thana. These officers will visit villages, build rapport with residents and gather inputs on suspicious movements.
Officials said the measures began in May, after intelligence suggested that JMB, allegedly backed by Pakistan’s ISI, was operating camps in Rangpur, Chattogram, Netrokona and Sylhet, radicalising Bangladeshi youths. Following the Aug 2024 regime change, anti-India activities by radical groups have increased, say intelligence sources. Several terror suspects – including Ansarullah Bangla Team chief Mufti Jashimuddin Rahmani, ABT’s alleged India operations head Ikramul Haque, Jamaat-ul-Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya chief Shamim Mahfuz and Sheikh Aslam – either escaped from prison or were released during the July protests, officials said.
JMB is said to have expanded organisational activity and explored links with Hefazat-e-Islami. Pakistani nationals reportedly attended recent meetings of radical groups, and investigators suspect some Bangladeshis are receiving training from Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba in Pakistan.
Security officials are also tracking the reported revival of Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami Bangladesh (HuJI-B).
“Rangpur is close to the Bengal border, while Netrokona, Chattogram and Sylhet border the northeast. Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram must also have these inputs. Once fencing is completed, such threats will reduce drastically,” a senior official said.
