Jadavpur University ragging victim’s father seeks CM meeting on case progress

Kolkata: The father of the Jadavpur University (JU) ragging victim has written to chief minister Suvendu Adhikari on Aug 6, seeking an appointment to discuss the status and progress of the ongoing court proceedings. The first-year student died after a fall from the second-floor balcony of the JU Main Hostel on Aug 9, 2023. Six current and six former students were arrested in the case and they are currently in judicial custody.
“My son took admission in JU to pursue Bengali Honours. He was a bright and promising student. But he was subjected to severe ragging by seniors and former students residing in the Main Hostel, which led to his untimely death on Aug 9, 2023,” said the student’s father.
He said, “It has been three years but my son has not got justice. We are fighting a legal case and I have full faith in the judiciary. Since our system is slow, I am afraid of how long I will have to wait. We are living each day with the pain of losing my son. I want a fair and speedy trial so that those guilty are given strict punishment. There should not be any recurrence of such cases in any educational institute, which are supposed to be safe for students. I seek an appointment with the CM to discuss the status and progress of the ongoing case.”
The university also formed a panel to probe the incident and recommended various degrees of punishment to at least 30 students. The punishments have also been implemented, said a source.
