Kolkata: Police in Barrackpore said on Saturday that they have identified some youths, who were allegedly involved in the assault on the 40-year-old theatre activist, Subhankar Dassharma, near Shyamnagar railway station in North 24-Parganas.
Dassharma, a member of theatre group ‘JanaGanaMana’, lodged an FIR at Jagaddal PS on Friday, alleging he was attacked around midnight on July 28, while returning home to Lenin Nagar. He said four men confronted him near the station and asked if he was Muslim, apparently because he was wearing a black kurta and pyjamas. When he objected and said Muslims had an equal right to live in India, the men allegedly punched and kicked him after he fell. Doctors later found injuries in his rib cage and a ruptured eardrum. A senior Barrackpore Commissionerate officer said police visited the spot, spoke to traders and residents, and examined CCTV footage. Arrests are expected soon, an officer said.
