  • Kolkata: The health department will summon doctors, interns and staff who were present in the chest medicine department of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital on the intervening night of Aug 8 and 9, 2024, when a female PG trainee doctor was raped and murdered. Her body was found in the third-floor seminar hall of the Emergency Building. Health minister Sharadwat Mukherjee said on Monday that everyone present in the building that night, particularly those who were with the victim, would be questioned by health department officials.

“The victim was a part of the health department. She was raped and murdered while on duty. But no internal inquiry was conducted by the health department. We have decided to conduct an inquiry to know what had happened that night,” Mukherjee said.

He acknowledged that the health department is not a law-enforcement agency but said its findings would be shared with the investigating agencies.

The victim last spoke to her family on the phone around 11 pm on Aug 8, telling them she would finish her work and rest. After completing her duties past midnight, she had dinner with colleagues, and later went to the third-floor seminar hall to sleep because there was no dedicated room for doctors on duty to rest.

Investigators have established that the assault and murder took place inside the seminar room in the early hours of Aug 9.

The victim’s parents have moved court seeking the questioning of their daughter’s colleagues about what happened that night. They have also alleged that evidence was destroyed and that attempts were made to downplay the incident immediately after it occurred.

On May 21, the Calcutta High Court ordered the formation of a three-member special investigation team of the CBI to examine the sequence of events from the time the doctor had dinner on Aug 9 until her cremation. The court also directed the CBI to submit a progress report on Aug 28 regarding its investigation into the alleged conspiracy in the rape-murder.
