West Bengal Health Department Removes Burdwan Medical College MSVP

Kolkata: The state health dept has removed the MSVP of Burdwan Medical College & Hospital (BMCH). An order on Saturday from Swasthya Bhawan not only shunted Tapas Ghosh to MJN Medical College & Hospital, Cooch Behar, but also stripped him of an administrative post by transferring him as a professor in the dept of anatomy.
Santanu Sen, MSVP, Medical College & Hospital Kolkata, will now be the MSVP at BMCH.
The action against Ghosh comes days after he was accused of threatening the community medicine dept head of BMCH to increase the internal assessment marks of a few undergraduate students who could not secure qualifying marks to sit in the third-year professional MBBS examination conducted by the West Bengal University of Health Sciences. About 10 days ago, the community medicine head wrote to the state health minister about the threat.
“We are happy that the health dept has taken action, after which the accused MSVP has not only been shunted but has been demoted, too. We have also demanded an inquiry into the allegations,” said Manas Gumta, former general secretary of the Association of Health Service Doctors.
Sources said Ghosh was close to the ‘North Bengal lobby’. But of late, he was trying to be close to the doctor cell of the party in office. BMCH got a new principal on July 24, and college insiders said the threat to the community medicine head started after the new principal took charge. They said the dean of students, who is known to be upright, was also forced to resign after the new principal took charge.
“The examination system in medical colleges has become much fairer and more transparent post the Abhaya movement. Unfortunately, some people like this MSVP are trying to bring back the corrupt examination system by threatening the community medicine head.”
After the allegations, representatives of senior and junior doctors like the Joint Platform of Doctors and West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Forum wrote to the health officials to probe the incident.
