Agartala: Ahead of elections for village committees of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (ADC), the CPM staged a protest in Tripura on Monday, accusing the BJP-led govt of undemocratic and authoritarian conduct.
A few hundred supporters were detained in Agartala, with party officials asserting that comparable civil disobedience actions occurred at 21 additional sites across the state, resulting in thousands of detentions.
Addressing the gathering, former CM Manik Sarkar said the turnout showed public “anger” at the govt and urged party cadre to channel it to expose what he called official failures. “The govt has utterly failed and must be removed,” he said.
Sarkar highlighted distress among farmers and agricultural workers, alleging a deep economic and social crisis, and said youth face growing uncertainty. He accused the Centre of reneging on a written assurance of remunerative farm prices under the C2+50% formula and ignoring shifting cultivators and farm labourers.
The protest was part of a nationwide ‘Jail Bharo’ campaign held at about 1,000 sites.
