  • Kolkata/Chinsurah: Bengal cricketer Abishek Porel, who plays for Delhi Capitals in the IPL, was arrested from a condominium in Dum Dum on Tuesday following a medical student’s allegation of rape and criminal intimidation. He was produced before a Chinsurah court, which remanded him in three-day police custody.

A left-handed wicketkeeper-batter, Porel has represented Delhi Capitals since 2023, when he joined the team as a replacement for injured Rishabh Pant.

The medical student, a Karnataka resident, lodged a complaint at Mogra PS alleging that Porel had engaged in a physical relationship with her on the false promise of marriage and subjected her to assault and criminal intimidation. She claimed they had been in a relationship for more than three years and had travelled abroad together. Differences arose last year, she alleged, after which Porel distanced himself and refused to marry her.

The woman alleged that on April 2, she travelled to Delhi to meet Porel and was abused and tortured. The FIR alleged that Porel confined her, denied her food and kept her isolated, leaving her physically weak and unable to walk properly. She was subsequently forced to seek medical attention, it said.

She later moved Calcutta High Court, alleging that Porel threatened to make public photographs of their intimate moments. In an order on July 14, the HC directed cops to arrest Porel and seize his electronic devices. Police confiscated a pen drive and sent it for forensic examination.

Police said they had visited Porel’s Chandernagore residence several times but could not find him there. Following a meeting involving Hooghly Rural SP K B Singh and senior officers, police arrested him on Tuesday. Porel, who has travelled with India A teams to the UK and Australia, had earlier denied the allegations.
