Tripura Hosts First Carbon Finance Meeting, Plans Credit Scheme Launch

Agartala: Tripura hosted its first stakeholders’ meeting on carbon sequestration and climate finance on Tuesday, bringing together 25 govt departments, academic institutions, NABARD and civil society to map opportunities and strategies.
Department of good governance, with ARPAN Society, directorate of biotechnology, IGDC Tripura project and JICA organised the meeting. Experts from Climate Action Network of South Asia led discussions.
Secretary to the CM Kiran Gitte said Tripura has strengths in accessing the adaptation fund and can benefit from carbon sequestration. He said preparations are underway for the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme, expected to launch soon, and that NITI Aayog has pledged support.
P S Banerjee, OSD to CM, cited changing seasonal cycles, irregular rainfall and rising temperatures, urging robust action.
Experts Dr Jayanta Basu and Dr Sanjoy Baishst outlined vulnerability, adaptation strategies, climate fund access and carbon trading. India stands as a major global source of carbon credits, aiming for its integrated carbon market to be internationally recognised by 2030. Tripura contributes significantly by providing carbon credit certificates due to its lack of polluting industries, Dr Basu said.
IFC’s Aejay Bandhyapadhya and NABARD’s Tanusri Bhattacharjee discussed financial support mechanisms for Tripura’s green projects and how to access climate funds.
