Teen’s plaint to cops after neighbour’s car runs over pet cat

Kolkata: Ballygunge Police have registered a case against a young woman after a luxury car allegedly ran over and killed a five-month-old pet cat on Deodhar Street on Sunday afternoon.
The cat, Simba, belonged to the family of Sandeep Kumar Das, a resident of the area. According to the family, Simba had accidentally wandered out of the house and onto the street while Das’s wife and their 17-year-old daughter were away at a drawing class.
When they returned, they found the cat badly injured and lying in a pool of blood in front of their home.
The family said local eyewitnesses told them that a young woman from a nearby business family was driving the car that allegedly hit the animal. They also claimed that the woman had recently received her driving licence.
Das’s daughter contacted the officer-in charge of Ballygunge PS and reported the incident. Police reached the spot and found the cat’s body on the road.
After the family filed a written complaint, police registered a case against the driver under charges related to negligence and provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. Police said the offences mentioned in the complaint are bailable under current law.
“We went through CCTV footage from six different locations. We have checked the movement of the car being driven by the suspect. We are sending her a notice to join the investigation,” an investigating officer said.
Police took custody of Simba’s body and sent it to the state-run animal hospital in Belgachhia for a post-mortem.
The incident has led to protests by local animal welfare groups.
