Deceased Organ Donation Plunges In Bengal, Count Stands At 7 This Yr

Kolkata: The pace of Bengal’s deceased organ donation has slowed down as indicated by the count so far this year. While organs from 13 deceased donors had given a fresh lease of life to at least 40 recipients with end-stage organ failure by this time last year, the donation count stands at seven so far this year. As the world observed Organ Donation Day on Thursday, multiple organisations working on organ donation held various awareness initiatives.
IPGMER & SSKM Hospital has drawn a blank this year so far. The donations so far have originated from private hospitals, with Apollo Multispecialty Hospital having given the highest count of five. The other two came from Ruby General Hospital and Manipal Hospital EM Bypass.
“There have been at least 14 brain-dead cases this year. Unfortunately, not all families agreed to donating organs,” said a SSKM official.
On Thursday, ROTTO (East) organised a rally on SSKM campus. Central Govt Health Scheme organised an awareness camp at Salt Lake Wellness Centre. Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine also held campaign at Ram Krishna Mission, Gol Park. Manipal Hospitals Kolkata also held a campaign ‘Shuruwat Ghar Se’.The Bengal Organ Donation Body organised the “East Zonal Deceased Organ Donation Conclave” on Thursday.
