KOLKATA: The Hastings Police has arrested a 32-year-old motorcyclist, identified as Rajesh Mondal of Matiya area in North 24 Parganas, late Wednesday night for allegedly stalking, verbally abusing, and making sexually suggestive remarks toward a 40-year-old woman bike rider near AJC Bose Road and DL Khan Road crossing.
The incident occurred when the victim, a resident of Picnic Garden under the Tiljala Police Station jurisdiction, was returning home on the app bike from a restaurant in Howrah. The harassment allegedly started on Vidyasagar Setu when a rider of another motorcycle aggressively intercepted them and wrongfully restrained their path. This forced the woman’s vehicle to come to a sudden halt near the busy AJC Bose Road intersection.
Once the vehicles stopped, the assailant launched an unprovoked verbal assault on the woman rider, claiming that the app bike rider was riding in a negligent manner. After the woman lodged a complaint,cops launched a probe into the matter. Cops have seized the vehicle. CCTV footage has also been collected.
Officers confirmed that further investigation into the incident is underway to record the formal statement of the victim in a court and process the accused for court production. CCTV footage from the area has also been collected. “We are going to place the chargesheet in quick time as part of our new SOP regarding crime against women,” said an investigating officer.
