KOLKATA: Kolkata is preparing for Independence Day under heightened security, while a major Calcutta High Court ruling and a dispute involving a prominent Durga Puja committee are also drawing attention.
Kolkata Police has deployed around 6,000 personnel and installed hundreds of CCTV cameras for Independence Day security on Red Road. Checks, quick-response teams and surveillance have been stepped up following security alerts.
The Calcutta High Court has meanwhile declared OBC certificates issued during a specified period in 2025-26 void, a decision that could affect candidates appearing for competitive examinations.
Heavy rain unlikely
Weather conditions are another city talking point. The meteorological department has indicated that Kolkata is unlikely to face very heavy rainfall despite the influence of a depression near Canning. Light to moderate showers remain possible.
