  • Kolkata: Kolkata Police has arrested a 42-year-old alleged middleman for "extorting money” from a patient’s family under the pretext of facilitating treatment at SSKM Hospital.

The suspect, identified as Amit Pramanik, a resident of Hingalganj, was taken into custody following a complaint by Suman Giri (35), a resident of Contai. According to police, Giri’s father, Dilip, was admitted to the urology dept with the help of Pramanik, who acted as a mediator. Over the past year leading up to July 21, the accused allegedly extorted approximately Rs 7,000 from the family by falsely claiming the funds were required for various medical tests.

The situation escalated when Pramanik demanded an additional Rs 6,000, allegedly claiming it was OT charge. When the family hesitated, the accused put the complainant under intense fear regarding potential health hazards and safety risks to his ailing father if the payment was not made.

Bhowanipore PS registered a case on Aug 13, 2026, under Sections 308(2) and 308(3) of the BNS, which cover offences related to extortion and putting a person in fear of injury to commit extortion.
