Kolkata: State finance minister Swapan Dasgupta met Jadavpur University (JU) vice-chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharjee on Wednesday during a visit to the institute for a blood donation camp. The 20-minutes discussion centred around the institute of eminence (IoE) tag and the shortage of maintenance funds. The discussion also included Pro-VC, registrar and few teachers apart from Dasgupta and Bhattacharjee.
Bhattacharjee said, “The state govt in their budget announced that the Centre would contribute Rs 1,000 crore and the state would contribute Rs 250 crore. We told him that we do not have any official sanction letter from the ministry of education on IoE. He assured us that he will support us to get an official sanction letter from the ministry.”
Physics professor Partha Pratim Ray said, “We requested the minister to see if our maintenance grant could be increased. The dearth of funds is affecting our physical infrastructure as some of our academic buildings and hostels are in a dilapidated condition. We also requested him to look into the issue of extension of the RUSA deadline, which is ending on Sept 30.”
