  • Sabang/Arambag: CM Suvendu Adhikari on Thursday made an aerial survey of flood-hit zones in Sabang and adjoining areas in West Midnapore and announced Rs 18 lakh compensation for two deaths and Rs 30,000 each for families of 3,200 damaged houses. Adhikari also asked the administration to be prepared for any emergency situation arising out of further rains.

“Sabang has been affected the most, though water level in Keleghai is under control. I reviewed the condition of five panchayat areas. While Arambag hasn’t been affected much, we are preparing for exigencies if it rains more,” he said.

Bengal govt has already sanctioned Rs 25 crore for Ghatal Master Plan, aimed at containing floods in these areas.

“Two persons died due to floods. We will pay compensation of Rs 9 lakh to each family. Nearly 3,200 homes have been damaged in Sabang block and we will pay each of them compensation of Rs 30,000. Farmers who have been hit due to floods will get relief under Prime Minister Crop Insurance Scheme,” he said.

After landing at Sabang in a helicopter, Adhikari went to BDO office and held a meeting with administrative officials, where MLAs from Pingla, Sabang and Narayangar were present.

“So far, 10 snake-bite cases have been reported and everyone was saved after treatment. PHE officials have distributed water pouches, apart from 20-litre water cans to each household,” the CM said. While nearly 11,000 homes are being built under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, another 13,000 homes will be built under the scheme, he added.

“Jyoti Basu came here during floods in 1986. No CM visited the place after that,” Adhikari said. The CM said he has instructed MoS Rajesh Mahato to stay for two more days, “until everyone has been sent back home and the list of crop losses has been prepared”.

“Adhikari has dealt with floods, droughts and natural disasters during his career in public service. People of Sabang are happy with his visit,” said former minister Manas Bhunia.
