  • Kolkata: A 64-year-old man, a small time former trader, allegedly stabbed his 56-year-old wife to death in their Kalighat home before ending his own life by consuming sleeping pills mixed with alcohol and slashing his wrists on Thursday.

Both individuals were rushed to SSKM Hospital, where attending doctors declared them brought dead.

According to police, they were alerted about the incident at 4B, Kundu Road, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Kalighat Police Station, on Thursday evening.

The officer-in charge found a crowd of locals gathered outside the residence. The wife, identified as Doly Dey (56), was shifted to the emergency ward of SSKM Hospital in an unconscious state with injuries allegedly inflicted by Barun Kumar Dey, her husband.

Cops found Barun lying unconscious inside the room with self-inflicted wounds on his hands. He was taken to SSKM Hospital, where medical staff confirmed that both victims had succumbed to their injuries. Preliminary probe revealed the husband had attacked his wife with a blunt ‘katari’. Family members told police that Barun had been suffering from a chronic mental disorder. Cops have recovered a suicide note. Though the suicide note appeared to be a suicide pact, police suspect that the wife was not a willing participant. The note had details about family assets.

The couple is survived by their son, daughter-in-law and grandson. Cops have cordoned off the crime scene.
