Kolkata: The liver and two kidneys of a 34-year-old fisherman from the Sundarbans, who was declared brain dead after an accident earlier this month, have saved the lives of three patients. Organs from deceased donor, Subodh Das of Kakdwip, were transplanted into the patients after consent received from his family. With this, IPGMER-SSKM opened its organ donation account this year.
His cornea has been stored at Shankar Nethralaya.
The deceased was rushed to the local govt hospital after he suffered head injury in an accident on Aug 14. He was referred to IPGMER-SSKM’s Trauma Care Centre. He succumbed to his injuries even after an emergency surgery conducted on him.
“We were counselled if we would come forward to donate his organs,” said his aunt, Rita Das, a community health worker.
After a go-ahead from the family, the hospital informed ROTTO (East) which supports and facilitates the allocation of organs.
The liver was allocated to IPGMER-SSKM, while the kidneys were donated to Kolkata Kidney Institute (KKI) and RN Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences (RTIICS).
All the three transplant surgeries concluded during the wee hours on Friday.
“This is our second deceased donor kidney transplant. Our recipient, barely 23 years old, has been on the end-stage kidney failure for close to two years now,” said nephrologist, Pratik Das, director KKI, which started transplant surgeries only a year ago.
Sources said the other kidney recipient at RTIICS is a 45-year-old school teacher. The liver recipient at SSKM’s School of Digestive and Liver Diseases is a 39-year-old man.
“My nephew is survived by his wife and two children. We are proud that his organs have provided hope for life to others. We appeal to people to save lives by donating the organs of brain dead persons,” she added.
