  • Kolkata: The proposed stock market listing of West Bengal Power Development Corporation Ltd (WBPDCL) has moved a step closer, with the state power department preparing a proposal to appoint a consultant for the exercise.

The proposal will be placed before the state cabinet shortly. “On behalf of WBPDCL, the power department has prepared a proposal for appointing a consultant for the proposed stock market listing of the company for the cabinet’s approval,” a senior official said.

The state plans to divest only a small stake while retaining majority ownership and control. The listing is aimed at strengthening WBPDCL’s capital base and funding expansion. The power utility plans an 800MW thermal unit at Bakreshwar, estimated to cost Rs 10,070 crore. WBPDCL reported a record operating profit of Rs 1,000 crore in 2024-25.
