Kolkata: Chief minister Suvendu Adhikari said that steps were being taken to check the rise in sugar and rice prices in the state. He also directed the state’s food inspectors to step up inspections across Bengal to monitor prices and prevent hoarding and adulteration.
“We have identified the points where the leakage is taking place. We will fix it. There will be no scope for this here,” CM stated. “From Sept 1 to 7, Consumer Protection Week will be observed. We have activated task forces afresh in the state,” he said.
Govt has constituted the task forces in 72 subdivisions and at the level of deputy commissioners in 35 police commissionerates. Adhikari on Monday held a meeting with food inspectors in the presence of the chief secretary and senior state govt officials. The state has set a target of inspecting at least 1,000 establishments and locations during the week, officials said.
“Do not threaten or intimidate anyone. Explain the rules politely,” Adhikari reportedly said, stressing that officials should educate businesses about food safety norms while taking action against violations. CM also expressed concern over alleged food adulteration and the use of artificial colours in vegetables.
