72-hr pvt practice bar for docs after admission day

Kolkata: The state health department has decided to debar faculty members and other govt doctors from private practice for 72 hours from the admission day.
Admission day is when a faculty member or a doctor attends to patients in OPD, admits patients, sees those patients in the ward after admission. For most faculty members such admission day comes once in a week.
The health department’s order on Monday said that even if a govt doctor has permission for engaging in private practice, they would be debarred for 72-hours from their respective admission day. The order said that decision was taken in the interest of better patient care.
“More close and intense monitoring of patients is necessary on the respective admission days, and it should be continued for 48 hours thereafter,” said the order. “It is hereby ordered that all faculties and doctors would be mandatorily debarred from engaging in private practice on the admission day and for two more days thereafter”.
Faculty members TOI spoke to said that teaching doctors conventionally avoid private practice on their admission days because they have a packed schedule on that day.
