  • Kolkata: Former CPM legislator from Uttarpara, Srutinath Praharaj, was granted bail by a district court in Chinsurah on Tuesday, a day after his arrest.

Police had arrested Praharaj and two other CPM activists, Dipak Chkaraborty and Anupam Chakraborty, for allegedly participating in a “mass disobedience movement” at Chinsurah on Aug 10. They were charged with obstructing police, creating disturbance and assaulting police personnel.

The three were produced before the court on Tuesday afternoon and granted bail.

On Aug 10, CITU activists broke through police barricades while marching towards the district magistrate’s office. Police dispersed them with a baton charge, injuring several activists and two police personnel. Over 40 activists were detained.

CPM Hooghly district secretary Debabrata Ghodh alleged Praharaj’s arrest was politically motivated.
