Former Trinamool MP Mamtaz Sanghamita passes away at 80

Kolkata: Former Trinamool MP Mamtaz Sanghamita died in a city hospital on Thursday. A former head of Medical College & Hospital’s gynaecology and obstetrics department, Sanghamita was 80.
Sanghamita was elected as an MP from Bardhaman-Durgapur in the 2014 Lok Sabha election.
Born in 1946 to former assembly speaker and state law minister Syed Abdul Mansur Habibullah and educationist Maqsooda Khatoon, Sanghamita studied at Medical College and did her postgraduate in the UK. In 1975, she married Nure Alam Chowdhury, a former acting Chief Justice of Calcutta HC and state animal resources minister.
IMA’s Bengal branch expressed deep shock and grief over the former MP’s death. “Dr Sanghamita was a dedicated medical teacher, a compassionate human being, and an active member of the medical fraternity. Her contribution to the profession and to society will always be remembered,” IMA said in a statement.
