  • Jalpaiguri: Jalpaiguri Municipality chairman Saikat Chatterjee resigned on Thursday after losing a no-confidence motion brought against him by councillors from his own party. Saikat has been facing criticism within his board since he met rebel Trinamool neta Ritabrata Banerjee recently.

Chatterjee received one vote while 16 voted against him. Two Congress councillors and the sole CPM councillor abstained from voting, while three Trinamool councillors were absent.

On July 30, nine TMC councillors – known to be Mamata Banerjee loyalists – had written to Jalpaiguri Sadar SDO, introducing a no-confidence motion against Chatterjee. Vice-chairman Sandip Mahato had refused to continue in his post after Chatterjee allegedly refused to assign any department to him.

In the 2022 municipal elections, Chatterjee drew widespread criticism over alleged rigging.

Councillor Tapan Banerjee claimed the moment Chatterjee met the rebel camp, Mamata Banerjee instructed them to remove him as chairman.
