‘Come back’: Suvendu appeals to Bengal techies working in other states

Kolkata: CM Suvendu Adhikari on Thursday appealed to Bengal’s information technology professionals working in other states to return as the newly elected govt has already started creating necessary infrastructure for the IT industry. The CM was speaking at the inauguration of Larsen and Toubro Group company LTM’s global delivery and AI competency center in Kolkata.
“I will request workers from Bengal engaged in different sectors in cities such as Mumbai, Pune and Bengaluru to come back as the double engine govt is functioning here,” the CM said. “Youngsters are leaving Bengal. They are going to other states or abroad. Once the LTM project starts, they can consider coming back home. Our govt is committed to rebuilding Bengal,” he added.
Pointing to the large unemployed workforce in the state, the CM said, “There is a large number of unemployed youngsters in need of jobs and income. They wanted to work in Bengal but were not able to find jobs here because the situation was not favourable.”
The CM’s comments come at a time the Bengal govt is preparing a comprehensive industrial promotion policy and is looking at introducing off-balance sheet incentives like soft loans, power tariff concessions, capital subsidies and tax reimbursements.
CM Adhikari said the govt was willing to extend help to small- and medium-scale entrepreneurs with a number of schemes with access to institutional credit.
“The govt will help entrepreneurs and small businesses through schemes such as PM Mudra, PM Vishwakarma and PMEGP. We will also try to strengthen industry-academia partnerships… nationalised banks are ready to disburse loans but there are no takers. We have to come out of the negativity,” the CM added.
He further directed HIDCO to allot 10 acres of land to LTM, a Larsen & Toubro group firm, for a data centre. LTM had previously announced it was planning a tier-3 data centre in the state and would seek land for the same. LTM is expected to build a 13MW data centre with an investment of Rs 2,000 crore.
Larsen & Toubro chairperson and managing director SN Subrahmanyan said the two towers of the LTM global delivery and AI competency center were already functional and accommodate nearly 5,800 engineers and other professionals serving global clients across banking and financial services, travel, manufacturing, technology and energy.
Construction of the LTM facility at the Silicon Valley hub in New Town began in 2023. “We have approvals to build four more towers. We will be ready with two more buildings on campus very soon,” he said. Subrahmanyan later met Bengal finance minister Swapan Dasgupta at Nabanna.
In a post on Facebook, Dasgupta said, “We had a discussion on employment, job creation and future prospects in the information technology sector. New employment, new job creation — let’s move forward on the path of prosperity in Bengal.”
