Kol Gets 19% Surplus Rain This Month, Seasonal Excess 10% So Far, Says Met

Kolkata: Amid forecast for more rain over the next two days, Kolkata has already received a monthly rain surplus of around 19% in Aug.
Till Sunday, the city has logged 423.3 mm of rain this month and surpassed the normal monthly rain count.
As far as seasonal count is concerned, Kolkata has received 1,108.5 mm rain so far this monsoon — a surplus of around 10%.
According to the Met office, the Aug rain count is likely to go up further by Monday. Under normal conditions, Kolkata should get 364 mm of rain in Aug. The city may get a few more spells of light, moderate rain in next few days.
“Aug is considered the second rainiest monsoon month after July. For the city, we already have a monthly surplus rain count. The city’s rain count as well as that of south Bengal as a whole is on the positive side even when measured seasonally,” said Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) Kolkata head H R Biswas.
Baring three days, Kolkata has received some amount of rain daily this month. On Aug 3, Alipore Met office had recorded the highest 24-hour rain count at 89 mm. The second highest 24-hour rain of 81.2 mm rain pounded the city two days later.
While the frequent showers, including incessant downpour had caused flooding on a couple of occasions causing traffic disruption and uprooting trees. The rain had kept mercury under its spell. The maximum temperature was forced to stay below normal on 19 days. The highest maximum temperature the city recorded this month was 34.4 degrees on Aug 2, which was barely 1.9 notches above normal.
Bay systems like low pressure areas had kept the monsoon flow active on most days.
They have been triggering rain, including heavy spells in parts of south Bengal since past couple of days. The Met officials have, however, ruled out heavy rain in Kolkata.
“We do not expect this system to intensify further. It is moving west-northwestwards. While it is likely to continue to trigger some heavy rain in districts like South 24 Parganas, East and West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia, Kolkata is likely to remain cloudy with few spells of light to moderate rain till Monday,” said RMC Kolkata meteorologist, Anwesa Bhattacharya. This year, southwest monsoon arrived in the city on June 12.
