Four rights groups urge Modi to seek justice for Bangladesh activists

Kolkata: Four minority rights groups on Monday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking Centre’s intervention to ensure justice for activists Shahriar Kabir and Rana Dasgupta, economist Abul Barkat, and minority campaigner Chinmay Krishna Das in Bangladesh. They said that despite regime change in Bangladesh, human rights violations continue.
At a news conference in Kolkata, Mohit Roy, former convener of the BJP minority cell in Bengal, said: “We are seeking help from the Indian govt. In the letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we asked for his intervention to ensure justice for Kabir and three other activists. Dasgupta has cancer and ailing Kabir is in jail.”
According to the organisations — CAAMB (Campaign Against Atrocities on Minorities in Bangladesh), All India Refugee Front, Secular Mission and Human Rights Beyond Frontiers Foundation — 66 members of religious minorities were killed in 61 incidents in Bangladesh in 2025. Between Jan 1 and June 30, 2026, 44 members were killed in 40 incidents.
“Central govt could put diplomatic pressure on Bangladesh govt or adopt other means to ensure justice for them,” Roy said.
Former Dhaka University employee Bappaditya Basu, who fled to Bengal, also sought India’s help.
