Restrict wall graffiti to designated areas, appeals VC

Kolkata: Jadavpur University vice-chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharjee appealed to all stakeholders not to undertake wall writing, graffiti, poster writing or similar activities indiscriminately on the walls and structures of the university and “restrict such activities to the designated spaces.”
The appeal comes after JU whitewashed graffiti on the campus on Saturday after CM Suvendu Adhikari’s ultimatum on Friday. The students on Sunday night again started reclaiming the walls across the campus in protest against the clean-up drive.
He wrote, “To facilitate freedom of expression while maintaining a clean and orderly campus, designated areas may be used for wall writing and other such forms of expression. All stakeholders are requested to restrict such activities to the designated spaces and refrain from writing on other walls, buildings, gates and public structures.”
He said JU evolved from the spirit of the national movement and carries a proud legacy of education, self-reliance, intellectual discourse and nation-building. “Its vibrant academic culture and cherished traditions of freedom of expression and democratic participation are integral parts to this legacy. It is, therefore, our collective responsibility to uphold this heritage while preserving the beauty, cleanliness and dignity of our campus. This is a collective effort to strike a proper balance between freedom of expression and responsibility towards our beloved university,” Bhattacharjee wrote.
