Malda authorities prepare to deport 37 Bangladeshi citizens arrested in Karnataka

Malda: Thirty-seven Bangladeshi citizens, who were arrested in another state, were brought to Malda to be deported to Bangladesh. They arrived at Malda Town station from Bengaluru on Tuesday night and were transferred to a holding centre in English Bazaar. From there, they will be pushed back across the border into Bangladesh, official sources said.
Malda police sources said the group was apprehended by 10 police stations in Karnataka for allegedly lacking valid documents. The 37 people sent to the holding centre included 17 women and a nine-day-old infant. A 20-member Karnataka police team escorted them from SMVT Bangalore station to Malda. The detainees said they were from Khulna and Rajshahi districts of Bangladesh and had crossed the border in search of employment.
Malda superintendent of police Anupam Singh declined to comment. BJP MLA and chief whip Amlan Bhaduri said: “Unlike the previous govt, we have taken a very firm stand on this issue. Those who do not have valid documents will be sent back.”
Malda has three holding centres to house illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, all established under the present govt. Bangladeshi citizens arrested in other districts are also brought here before being deported across the border.
