  • Howrah: One man died and seven others were injured in two accidents due to waterlogging issues and pothole-riddled roads in Howrah.

On Wednesday, Sahadeb Bachar (36) died after falling into rainwater accumulated on a road in Purbanhannapara under Domjur Police Station. Police said waist-deep water had accumulated in the area. Bachar was cycling home through the water when he allegedly lost his balance and fell into the water. His body was later recovered by police and sent for post-mortem.

His brother, Mahadeb, blamed the condition of the road and clogged drainage for the death. He also alleged that repeated complaints by locals had gone unaddressed.

On Aug 22, Kajal Deyashi (47), a neurological patient had drowned in water accumulated in front of his house at Kashipur under Dasnagar Police Station.

Waterlogged roads also caused two accidents on Tuesday in which seven passengers were injured after three-wheelers overturned on damaged stretches. One accident took place on Benaras Road in the waterlogged Kona Tentultala area, where a passenger-laden toto overturned after hitting potholes hidden under rainwater. Four passengers were injured. Cops took them to Howrah District Hospital. Two were discharged by evening, while two others were admitted with fractures in their arms, legs, collarbones and ribs.

Another accident occurred on OT Road in Uluberia’s Kamarshala area, where an auto overturned after falling into a pothole on a waterlogged stretch. Three passengers were injured and taken to Uluberia Medical College and Hospital. Two of them who suffered serious injuries were admitted, while one was released after treatment.
