Kolkata sees relief after heavy rain; light showers forecast

Kolkata: After two days of torrential rain, the city breathed easy on Thursday with few spells of light to moderate rain. The Met office said that while Kolkata will continue to get light, moderate rain in the next few days, it ruled out a deluge like the ones that happened on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Even as the low pressure area and a trough line that had caused rain havoc between Tuesday and Wednesday has moved away from the city skies, a cyclonic circulation over Bangladesh is causing the current rain spells in Kolkata and other parts of the state.
“This cyclonic circulation is impacting mainly the eastern and northern region of the state. On Thursday, Nadia got the maximum impact. This system along with the monsoon trough will continue to trigger a few spells in Kolkata but the kind of heavy rain that we encountered in the past two days is unlikely for now,” said H R Biswas, head at Regional Meteorological Centre Kolkata.
On Thursday wee hours, Kolkata and Dum Dum saw intense thunder strikes. Met officials said this was due to thundercloud formation as a result of moisture convergence from the cyclonic circulation over Bangladesh. On Thursday, the Alipore Met office recorded 10.4 mm of rain.
