  • Kolkata: Three alleged Bangladeshi smugglers were arrested on Thursday for allegedly assaulting a BSF jawan who tried to prevent a jewellery smuggling attempt at Doharkanda in North 24 Parganas’ Swarupnagar.

According to sources, several people had gathered in the India-Bangladesh border area allegedly to smuggle silver jewellery. “A BSF jawan on duty spotted them and tried to stop the group. The smugglers attacked and assaulted him and also attempted to snatch his service firearm,” a senior police officer said.

Hearing the jawan’s cries for help, other BSF personnel rushed to the spot. As the smugglers tried to flee, the jawans managed to apprehend one of them, identified as Yusuf Dafadar. He was handed over to Swarupnagar police. During interrogation, cops identified two more persons and arrested them.

All three accused, including Yusuf, were produced at Basirhat subdivision court on Friday. The court remanded them in police custody for seven days.
