Kolkata: Kolkata Police’s Cyber Crime Branch arrested 6 men belonging to the infamous Jamtara gang in connection with a case involving the alleged siphoning of ₹19,51,000 from a victim through a malicious APK installed on the victim’s mobile phone, officials said.
The case was registered at Survey Park police station on February 2. Following analysis of digital evidence and the fund trail, police said they identified the gang involved in collecting and distributing bank credentials and SIM cards used in cyber fraud.
Raids were conducted in rented accommodations at Sodepur under the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate late on February 23 and into the early hours of February 24, leading to the arrests of Arindam Das (21), Souvick Bepari (23), Sayan Rajbanshi (21) and Arpan Das (27). Police said they seized 4 mobile devices, bank documents, 10 activated SIM cards and other digital evidence.
Based on disclosures by the arrested men, police said further raids continued in Kolkata to trace other members.
In a subsequent operation within Entaly police station limits, police arrested Dildar Ansari (33) and Anish Sarkar (21) on Tuesday. Seizures included 12 mobile phones, jewellery items, 3 ATM cards, 4 cheque books, 2 wristwatches, a Tata Harrier with documents and key, and ₹8,00,000 in cash.
Police alleged Sarkar procured bank credentials and bank-linked SIM cards and passed them to Ansari, who is suspected to be linked to a Jharkhand-based cyber fraud gang and operated multiple accounts to move and withdraw proceeds, including purchases of gold. All accused were produced before the ACJM court in Alipore, police said. MSID:: 128753126 413 |
