Kolkata: The Uniform Civil Code drafting committee in Bengal will hold public hearings across five divisions, taking in suggestions, CM Suvendu Adhikari said on Monday. The panel held its first meeting on Thursday in New Delhi. The committee will invite public suggestions and a permanent office in Kolkata will accept copies of representations from people and rights bodies, a source said.
“Our meeting is ongoing. The home secretary is a member, and the meeting is taking place under the leadership of retired Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai. Hearings will be held across five divisions and everyone’s suggestions will be taken,” the CM said.
Adhikari added, “Once the committee says that the UCC can be implemented, I will bring it to the assembly. That is my job. I should not interfere in the internal work of the commission. I receive reports from the home secretary regarding the commission and its members, who are functioning in a proper and satisfactory manner.”
