Jadavpur road to turn single-lane, varsity to close 4 out of 5 gates

JU officials said gates 2, 3, 4 and 5 on Raja SC Mullick Road will remain shut from 4pm on Wednesday. Normal classes and seminars will continue, though some professors are considering shifting classes scheduled between 3pm and 4.30pm online. Computer Science and Engineering professor Nandini Mukherjee said an important meeting with industry representatives at the Salt Lake campus had to be cancelled as professors from the Jadavpur campus would find it difficult to travel in the afternoon.
A source said that UG1 classes in some departments like English and sociology have been called off.
A notice signed by registrar Selim Box Mandal said Raja SC Mullick Road would remain closed from 4 pm, and urged stakeholders to use Gate No. 1 for entry and exit.
Adhikari is scheduled to join the gathering at Golpark at 3pm and walk to Jadavpur 8B, where he will address the gathering. Police said traffic on the Sukanta Setu-bound flank between Golpark and Jadavpur 8B will be suspended from 3pm to 6pm.
“The police informed us and the university authorities acted accordingly. Students also requested us to close the gates,” said an official. VC Chiranjib Bhattacharjee said, “It is a full-fledged normal academic day for us.”
Students and professors said classes and seminars would continue, though there were concerns over returning home. “An English department class at 4.30 pm will be shifted online. There is apprehension among students and guardians about returning home safely, but most will attend classes. Student organisations and teachers will remain active to prevent any untoward incident,” said third-year English student Indranuj Ray.
IR professor Subhajit Naskar said, “A three-day national convention is scheduled to start from Wednesday.”
Students affiliated to SFI will march to Aurobindo Bhavan over various demands. AIDSO members will draw a portrait of Lenin that had been damaged.
