Kol to get a ‘sanatani’ mayor soon, says Sukanta
Times of India | 9 September 2026Targeting more than 180 seats in KMC elections, BJP plans to base its manifesto and civic governance strategy on the Indore Municipal Corporation model, focusing on urban infrastructure, waste management and cleanliness.
While party workers have begun consultations with residents across Kolkata and Howrah to gauge their priorities, the party’s ‘Sankalp Patra’ will be released after the festive season.
BJP sources said Indore was chosen as a benchmark because the city consistently ranks as India’s cleanest civic body due to daily garbage collection, source segregation and zero-landfill initiatives.
Indore’s civic body also plugged thousands of outfalls that previously discharged untreated waste into local waterbodies, operating small, decentralised sewage treatment plants (STPs) to process waste near its source. Bengal BJP has suggested implementing a similar filtration mechanism before drainage water is released into local canals, waterbodies and the Hooghly river.
Over the past two days, BJP national general secretary Sunil Bansal held meetings with party MLAs, netas and district functionaries from Kolkata and Howrah. Following political shift in the state and administrative re-alignment of ward boundaries, BJP aims to replicate Indore’s urban management model across both cities.
“A committee has been formed to draft the ‘Sankalp Patra’. We have been asked to formulate plans for Kolkata modelled on Indore’s civic services,” Majumdar said.
On Tuesday, Majumdar met mandal-level workers from wards 29 and 45 in Beleghata as well as wards 136 and 138 under Bhowanipore-2 assembly segment to review ground-level preparations.
“We are not a party driven by individual decisions. We have a strong organisation guided by ideology. Whichever councillor is elected mayor will follow the party’s philosophy. Kolkata Corporation will get a sanatani mayor after a long time,” he added.
