City comes together to celebrate sarod exponent Buddhadev Dasgupta’s legacy
Times of India | 10 September 2026The concert featured bandish compositions by Dasgupta that drew inspiration from Rabindrasangeet. His students Pratyush Bandopadhyay, Soumik Datta, Abir Husain, Smarajit Den and Swarnendu Mandal performed the compositions, while Sangeeta Datta, Debashish Raychaudhuri, Sounak Chatterjee and Rohini Raychaudhuri presented Rabindrasangeet.
They were accompanied by Debjit Patitundi on tabla and Debashish Saha on keyboard. Chief guest Pramita Mallick spoke about her association with Dasgupta and recalled his role as a teacher, including his training of Soumik Datta in London.
Datta, who grew up in London, began learning from Dasgupta at the age of 13. He is an Aga Khan Music Award recipient and a contemporary composer. He recently completed an eight-month tour of India supported by the British Council.
The concert marked a reunion of Dasgupta’s students on stage, while the singers also came together after a considerable gap. The show was sold out within a day, with the organisers considering another edition in Kolkata.
