Jadavpur University Resumes Normal Classes After Saffron March Rally
Times of India | 11 September 2026According to campus sources, student turnout was as usual in the departments as it is in normal academic days. “Around 25 third-year students attended classes at the English department, which is normal. Similarly, at the history dept, 35 students turned up for their third-year classes. A two-day national workshop on Canadian Studies that was rescheduled to Sept 10 and 11 from Sept 9 and 10 at the comparative literature dept saw good participation of students,” said a source.
On Wednesday, most classes in various departments were called off while some were shifted to online mode as students apprehended the commuting problem on Wednesday. There was visibly low attendance in classes that were held on campus.
According to English dept professor Manojit Mandal, the campus situation is apparently normal. “Students have turned up in numbers but a sense of uneasy calm prevails. Most of the teachers come for teaching and research. We are really disappointed to see where the matter stands. We are now in the middle of utilising the long overdue funds to the tune of Rs 44 crore granted under RUSA 2.O. This is a time-bound project and the deadline is very tight. Whatever is happening on the political fronts both within and outside the campus is really impeding the development works. I have tremendous respect for real sadhus practising real renunciation. But I was stunned at the sight of naga sadhus on Wednesday as it’s unprecedented in front of a university gate,” Mandal said.
Third-year Bengali student Bristi Dutta said, “The attendance in our dept was a bit low today also. What happened on Wednesday should not have happened in front of a university. It was disturbing. Students staying far away avoided campus today as well.” Sociology student Anubhab Gupta said, “We were astounded with the sight of naga sadhus in front of a university, which is a centre of scientific work and critical thinking.”
Electrical engineering dept associate professor Arindam Sil said, “Classes were called off on Wednesday as students apprehended commuting problems as roads were blocked and the university shut its gate from 4 pm onwards. On Thursday, it is a normal academic day for us from 11 am to 5.30 pm. Nearly 90% of pupils turned up for theory and lab classes. The participation on Thursday at the three-day national convention — International Relations Scholastic Conclave — was high compared to Wednesday.
“As there was no road block and no issues with movement, we saw students’ participation from other colleges and universities,” said assistant professor Subhajit Naskar. AIDSO reclaimed the wall and repainted the portrait of Lenin near Subarna Jayanti which was distorted allegedly by Nationalist Students’ Front last Friday.
