• Kol Gets 3 More Flights To Cambodia, Singapore, China

  • Kolkata: Flight connections to Shanghai and Siam Reap, the temple town famous for Angkor Wat, will be reinstated from Oct ahead of the Durga Puja holidays. The city will also get another flight to Singapore from next month. At present, Singapore Airlines operates daily flights between Kolkata and Singapore City.

IndiGo Airlines that operates over 100 flights from Kolkata is set to resume flights from Kolkata to three cities: Shanghai in China, Siam Reap in Cambodia and Singapore. These flights had been withdrawn in March in the wake of geopolitical challenges following the war in Iran.

An airline official said all three flights would commence from Oct 1. While the flight to Shanghai would operate daily, the flight to Singapore would operate six days-a-week (other than Tuesday). The flight to Siam Reap is three days-a-week: Monday, Thursday and Saturday.

Apart from these flights, IndiGo operates five more international flights from Kolkata: Dhaka, Bangkok, Hanoi, Phuket and Guangzhao.

Sources in the industry said the conflict in West Asia and the flight disruptions that had followed had led to a sharp decline in passenger loads, forcing airlines to suspend flights on multiple sectors.

But with the Durga Puja festival round the corner, carriers that operate from India, including IndiGo, are introducing multiple international flights. “In Oct, the airline is also introducing twice-a-week flights from Bhubaneswar to Bangkok on Oct 1, Gaya to Bangkok on Oct 26 and Guwahati to Bangkok on Oct 27. The following month on Nov 20, a flight will start from Mumbai to Dar es Salaam in Tanzania,” an airline official said.

Travel Agents Federation of India chairman (east) Anil Punjabi welcomed the return of flights to Kolkata. “Coming after the tragedy in Nepal, this is a welcome change. The flights open up a lot more travel options,” said Punjabi.

Travel Agents Association of India chairman (east) Anjani Dhanuka felt the return of IndiGo flights will encourage other carriers, both Indian and international, to connect with Kolkata. “We need a flight connection to Europe. Let’s hope that happens,” he said.
