Trader loses Rs 1.4 lakh to sextortion, digi arrest
Times of India | 11 September 2026A case was registered at the Garden Reach PS on Wednesday. Officers reiterated that there was nothing called “digital arrest” as no one could be arrested over video calls, calls or text messages.
Police said the elaborate con started with the gang making a video call to the trader on Instagram and showed him explicit adult content. They reportedly persuaded the trader to undress on camera and also took his mobile number. Shortly, one of the accused called the trader, claiming he had been put under “digital arrest” for the explicit video recording.
Scared of legal action, the trader agreed to “settle” the matter and paid Rs 1,45,520 in multiple online transactions.
