DRDO defence project in East Midnapore on track: CM

In April 2024, DRDO had proposed a testing range along the East Midnapore coast to complement the integrated testing range in Odisha’s Chandipur.
The facility would be aimed at reducing operational congestion and facilitate testing of weapon systems, radar equipment and short-range missiles.
When announced, the proposal faced stiff resistance from local fishing groups and coastal cooperatives, who raised concerns about access to traditional fishing grounds.
They argued that building exclusion zones during missile testing would restrict maritime access, disrupt fish-drying and displace small fishermen.
The CM’s statements on Friday indicated that the concerns may have eased.
